Film and New Media: Preserving and funding new developments
While film was the medium of the 20th century, computers, digital images and the Internet have become the media of the next. The goal of the Foundation is to provide all new forms of media the space and support they need to explore new aesthetic possibilities while preserving the artistic works they have produced.
Although film and video art are relatively young artistic genres, their works are threatened by material deterioration and oblivion. Therefore, the Foundation has funded several re-mastering and restoration projects, e.g., the restoration of “Battleship Potemkin” (S. Eisenstein), the DVD edition of Alexander Kluge’s works, the reconstruction of the TV epic “Berlin Alexanderplatz” (R.W. Fassbinder) and the project 40yearsvideoart.de.
With the transmediale the Foundation funds one of the most important festivals of media art in the world. The annual festival in Berlin presents new, forward-looking projects in the field of digital art and culture, provides a forum for discussion on current developments and tendencies, and reflects on the role of digital media in our world today.
In funding the Theatertreffen, the Foundation strongly supports one of the top events in the German-language theatre scene. The event is held in Berlin every year and showcases the ten most remarkable performances in Germany, Switzerland and Austria from the past season.
